When the Ground Moves

Machine control systems assume the ground stays where it is. In most of the world, that is a safe assumption. In Alaska, it is not. Permafrost cycles cause benchmarks to shift, sometimes by several inches over a single season. A control point you set in May might be off by the time you finish grading in September.

This is not a Topcon problem. It is a physics problem. But it means Alaska operators need to approach machine control differently than their counterparts in the Lower 48.

Benchmark Management in Active Zones

The solution starts with benchmark management. In active permafrost zones, we recommend re-shooting control points at least monthly during the construction season. Set your primary benchmarks on bedrock or deep-driven pins that reach below the active layer. Use the permafrost-affected points as secondary checks, not primary control.

Cold Weather Operations

Topcon equipment is rated for cold weather operation, but Alaska cold is different from Minnesota cold. At 40 below, battery life drops dramatically. LCD screens respond slowly. Hydraulic fluid thickens and affects the machine control valve response time.

We configure our installs with cold weather kits that include heated cab displays, insulated battery compartments, and adjusted valve timing parameters. These are not aftermarket hacks. They are configuration adjustments we have developed over 25 years of putting machine control on Alaska equipment. The factory does not ship these settings because most of their customers do not need them.
