Before You Start
The Topcon 3D-MC2 is a powerful system, but it is only as good as its setup. A sloppy installation means sloppy grades, and on a D6 dozer moving serious material, sloppy grades mean rework. This guide assumes you have a factory-installed or GPS Alaska-installed 3D-MC2 system on your Cat D6 and you need to set it up for a new job. If you are doing a first-time install, call us. The sensor mounting and wiring harness need to be done right the first time.
Gather your materials before you start: the GX-77 control box, both GPS receivers with mounting poles, the MC-R3 radio, your job design file on a USB drive, and the calibration rod. You will also need the machine dimensions sheet that came with your installation. If you lost it, we have your machine on file.
Mounting the GPS Receivers
The D6 uses a dual-receiver setup with one GPS antenna on each side of the blade. The receivers mount to the mast poles that bolt to the blade brackets. Make sure the mast poles are straight and the receivers are level. A crooked mast means a crooked grade reading, and the system has no way to compensate for a physical mounting error.
Slide each receiver onto its mast and tighten the clamp. Connect the cables to the junction box on the back of the blade. The cables should have enough slack to handle full blade range of motion without pulling tight. Check this by cycling the blade through its full range before proceeding. Pinched cables are the number one field failure we see on D6 installations.

Loading the Design File
Insert your USB drive into the GX-77 control box. Navigate to File Manager and select Import. The system reads Topcon TP3 files, LandXML, and DXF surfaces. Select your design surface and confirm the import. The GX-77 will display the surface boundaries on screen.
Verify the design by checking a known point. Drive to a survey stake with a known elevation and compare what the GX-77 displays versus what the stake says. If they match within a tenth, you are good. If they are off, check your localization. The most common mistake is loading a design file that references a different coordinate system than your base station is broadcasting.
Calibrating the Blade
Park the dozer on flat ground and lower the blade to the surface. On the GX-77, go to Setup and select Blade Calibration. The system will walk you through a sequence: raise the blade to full height, lower it to the ground, tilt it full left, tilt it full right. At each position, the sensors record the blade geometry and the GPS receivers record the antenna positions.
This calibration tells the system exactly where the blade cutting edge is relative to the GPS antennas. If you skip this step or rush through it, the system will put the blade in the wrong place. Every time you swap blades or adjust the mounting brackets, you need to recalibrate. It takes five minutes and saves hours of rework.
First Grade Check
With the system calibrated and the design loaded, make a test pass on a section of known grade. Run the dozer in automatic mode and let the 3D-MC2 control the blade. After the pass, check the grade with a survey rod or a rover at several points along the pass.
You should be within a tenth of design grade across the full pass. If you are consistently off by the same amount, you have a calibration issue. If the error varies across the pass, check your base station corrections and make sure you have a solid RTK fix. A float solution will give you wandering accuracy that looks like random error.
Once your first pass checks out, you are ready to grade. The system will maintain grade automatically as long as it has a solid GPS fix. If you lose correction signal, the blade will hold its last known position until signal returns. Do not keep grading on a stale fix. Stop and wait for RTK to re-establish.
